What do we mean by having an “image of the child”?  How does this image influence how you work with children?

When we say having the “image of the child” it means how different individuals may view children in general and what the child can or cannot do. There are hundreds of different images if the child. You can have a good “image of the child” or a bad one.

If you have a bad image of the child you may think that children are messy, cannot do much by themselves, and are not very smart, etc.  The environment that you provide for the children will be directly affected by these images. For example if you think children are messy, then you will create an environment that is ‘mess poof’. In environments where you do not think of the child highly, they will be less likely to succeed then another child in an environment where the image of the child is able and capable.

These images influence so much how you work with the child as well. The child has the right to have a good school and good teacher. If your images are of what the child cannot yet, how is the child ever supposed to learn those things? The child needs to be thought of as capable, because they are very more than capable.

If you have a good “image of the child” you may think that:

  • Playful
  •  Curious
  •   Ever changing
  •  Pleasers
  • Trusting
  • Creative
  •  Smart
  • Capable
  • Loving
  •   Imaginative
These images of the child promote what a child can do and the environment will reflect those images. For example the child is creative so let’s give him somewhere where he can make something that he can be proud of. The child is smart and curious so let’s give her a place where she can wonder and think and learn new things. Let’s give her a place where her imagination can set free and play.
